A black shape moved easily through the night, blue eyes glowing in the darkness. She was still Featherdance. But not for much longer. Tallstar had died, and though her heart was filled with sorrow, this was what she had to do. She slipped into Mothermouth, tail twitching with nervousness. The tunnel narrowed, but it was no problem for such a lithe cat. The previous leader had told her what she had to do, but nothing he could have said in his dying breath could have prepared her for Moonstone. The sheer brilliance of it seemed to draw her closer, until she was nearly touching it. Remembering at the last second she must lay down, she did so and felt the cool smoothness of the rock disappear in the dark confines of sleep.
She was sitting in the middle of a dark landscape. Nine cats sat in a semi-circle around her, eyes glowing strangely in the blackness. One stepped forward, a beautiful calico she-cat. Featherdance nearly said "Mother", but caught herself just in time. She wasn't aloud to speak. "Run with the swiftness of your clan." her foster-mother said, touching her head briefly before walking away. The next was a young cat with green eyes. Marshpaw lifted herself to her back paws and tapped her head. "Teach your clan to the best of your abilities." Another sandy-furred young cat approached. "Learn to stifle your anger in the light of reason" The next, a blue-grey tom, saying "Remember that the strength of your Clan will always be behind you." A brown-eyed tom, Chestnuteyes's father, "Don't let emotion cloud your judgments." A black she-cat, "Follow Starclan and the warrior code without hesitation." An green-eyed she-cat. "Do what's best for your clan." A tom that could have been the formers twin. "Resist the thirst for more power. Be content with what you have." Finally, the last moved forward. Tallstar. "Lead your clan to the best of your abilities." He moved back, then turned toward her again and sat. "Dark times are approaching, Featherstar. All the clans will be affected. Some will change for the better, others for the worse. Tread carefully, Featherstar..."
The vision faded away, and Featherstar rose to her feet, slightly stiff. Things were going to be different, that was for sure. The change of power wasn't the best thing, with Tallstar's disaster coming up. She slipped away from Mouthermouth, fear pushing away sorrow.
((I know I probably don't have to do this, but it's a pretty good way to introduce a leader, right?))
